    La Ciociara Collection

    Majolica tableware

The majolica decoration is called "Opus" and is inspired by the iconographic tradition of the ancient Abbey of Montecassino.

The Abbot Desiderio (1058-1087), had the geometric mosaic floor in polychrome marble of the new abbey church built in Montecassino, which was finished by 1071. The mosaic floor was made with the opus sectile technique, in Latin “ work for cutting ", a particular type of mosaic or marquetry in polychrome marbles. Desiderio purposely had the specialized mosaic technicians arrive from Constantinople and bought the necessary marbles in Rome.

In the magnificent floor it is possible to identify several motifs common to the classical and Byzantine repertoire, present then in the rich Roman cosmatesque repertoire above all from regular geometric figures: squares, triangles, rhombuses, hexagons and octagons which, combined together, form other more complex geometric figures.
